Twitter: what is it and what is it for?

It is possibly the most popular microblogging tool by the number of users who use it. It is based on sending text messages answering the question What are you doing? It is a service that combines the concept of the blog (personal diary in which the author publishes content in chronological order) with that of instant messaging (communication systems that allow us to have real-time conversations with other users on the internet) , allowing you to write messages (which can be written from a website, from an instant messaging system, through a text message or through applications developed for this purpose), addressed to other users who use this service.Story This platform was born, at the beginning of 2006, in the way in which great inventions are born: almost by chance. Its founders worked at a podcasting company called Odeo . Despite having among its members people like Evan Williams (who years before had founded and later sold to Google one of the main blogging platforms , Kazakhstan Phone Number List  , the company did not go through good times, with strong competition. In this way, they entered a process in search of new products and services to offer. During this process, as one of its founders , dom , tells us , one of the ideas that was born wascreate an SMS service that would allow communication between people who were part of a group . It was about creating a simple system that would allow you to send an SMS with any information not to a single user but to several at the same time. The idea was liked and it was selected as one of the projects to work on: on March 21, 2006 version 0.1 of this service was created. Its original name, TWTTR , responded to the fact that in the United States the numbers to send SMS are five figures, in his case 10958. During the first months only the people who worked on the project and their relatives had access to this service that already from the beginning they themselves qualified as ” addictive “.

A few months later the founders of Twitter left Odeo (it was difficult to keep the company afloat but even more to explain the usefulness and future of Twttr) and in May 2006 they created Obvious Corp , an incubator for new projects where Twttr was their main asset. At this moment two relevant events happen:Change your name to become Twitter .It was decided to limit the messages to 140 characters (originally this limitation did not exist since when an SMS of more than 160 characters was sent the operator cut it into two or more messages but to avoid losing information it was limited to 140, leaving the 20 remaining for username). But the great moment was yet to come, the launch of Twitter occurred in March 2007 when they won the South by Southwest Award in the blog category and as Wikipedia reminds us, the CEO of Twitter at that time, Jack Dorsey , picked up the award saying “ We’d like to thank you in 140 characters or less. And we just did! ”.At this time the web version of Twitter already existed, so that communication was no longer necessarily done via SMS. From that moment on, an exponential growth of the service began, becoming the main nanoblogging platform to date , both in use and in number of users. It is currently estimated that it has more than 22 million unique users and almost 50 million registered accounts (although this data is an estimate given that Twitter does not offer public data). On November 4, 2009 , the service translated into Spanish was launched (translation carried out by the users of the service themselves).

How does it work?In just one step you can use this service. An account must be created on the Twitter page assigned a username and password. We will automatically obtain an account on twitter that will have the name: Once the account is registered we will be able to add a brief personal description, a photograph and an address of another web page (for example a blog or the page of the company for which the Twitter account is created). From this moment on we will be able, using the text box on the screen, to write the texts we want (called twitts ) with a maximum of 140 characters. Both our messages and those written by other people appear on the screen in chronological order (known as time line) with the following structure:User’s photo (if you do not want to put a photo, an image appears by default) – User name – Twitt text – minutes, days or hours that it has been written – place from where it has been written (can be from the Internet or a phone, for example). In order to read the texts that other people write, we must become “followers” of these people ( followers – . Through the search engine we will be able to find other Twitter users, see their profile and description and by clicking on the “ Follow ” button we will be able to see, from that moment, all the comments that they publish. There are two ways to try to ensure some privacy . In the first place, a user can be blocked so that, nor do we want to, he cannot see our comments. Secondly, we can block our account so that when another user wants to become our “follower” before he can see any text, we will receive an email in the account that we have given in the registration process requesting our authorization.Other interesting features of the platform are:Allows direct messages a twitter user can send, only to his followers, direct messages that only they can read. The message is sent through Twitter and received in the email account of the “follower”.Reply : You can reply to published tweets (using the reply option) so that conversations can be established. Through the tab “Responses” (replies) you can see all the responses received to the messages issued.Favorites you can mark (through a star next to the message) a text as a favorite so that at any time the message can be retrieved and other users can also consult it.Application Nanoblogging is configured as one of the tools par excellence of the so-called “ Social Media” (which we can literally translate by Social Media). Its basic uses are focused on:

” Talk Daily” : tool micorcomunciación with people closer or more distant environment based on synchronous conversations (the two are connected and are exchanging messages) or asynchronous (one of the two can not be connected and what is left the message waiting for a later reply).Generate conversations : starting from a relevant fact for oneself, we seek to generate a conversation. A meteorological event, the purchase of a product, a complaint about a service or a question are sufficient basis for generating this conversation.Sharing information : the cornerstone of these tools is sharing information that one considers interesting. In this way, the tool becomes a primary source for obtaining information. For example, identifying “expert” or knowledgeable users on a specific topic and following them will obtain relevant information on a topic (in this way, following Tim O’reilly , for example, ensures obtaining interesting and relevant information on everything that accompanies Web 2.0).Report News : the immediacy of dissemination, its multiplatform nature that allows it to be used from any connected device and its social nature make it sources of news circulation. From a personal point of view, De Phone Number can be used to:Passionate about helping companies and people to get closer to the network, incorporating their marketing and communication strategies within the logic of Social Media.
